The OAE Night Shift in Brixton

Bethany joins lutenist Sergio Bucheli focusing on the works of Bayard Rustin who worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr and was the main organiser of the March on Washington in 1963. He was also involved with the early music revival in New York during the 1950s and 1960s having learnt the lute whilst in jail in California for the “crime of sodomy” (as it was at the time). Tonight’s setlist features baroque songs that he recorded and performed in New York by Purcell, Cornysh and Dowland, as well as his own pastiche Elizabethan song ‘I saw her as I came and went’.

After meeting at an Italian wedding feast in 1600, we’ll then pay homage to the master of melancholy John Dowland, summon gods and dancefloors through the music of Henry Purcell, indulge in a sorbet of folk music, then get très romantique with gallant music by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Telemann, and autres. Expect heart-rending melodies, impassioned virtuosic flair, and tender moments of stillness. Texts and translations will be provided.

The Night Shift Back at The Old Queen’s Head

A time travelling tour of the British Isles and Ireland with violinist Julia Kuhn, singer Bethany Horak-Hallet and friends.

Put on your musical hiking boots as we head to all corners (and beyond) to unearth the stunning variety our islands have to offer and have inspired. The setlists will include pieces from some of the better known names to have lived and worked on these shores – such as Handel, Tobias Hume and Joseph Haydn – to more unfamiliar figures such as Johann Christoph Pepusch, Thomas Roseingrave and Matthew Dubourg and traditional and folk songs from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – including an arrangement of Irish songs by Rebecca Clarke.

No rollicking grand tour would be complete without some communal singing, of course.
